A Great Pilates Trainer Can Make All The Difference

Pilates Trainer

The Pilates method of exercise has become extremely popular over the past decade or so. If you've decided you want to get involved and you're looking for a Pilates trainer, here are some points you might want to take into consideration:

If you have no experience with Pilates, start by looking for a certified Pilates instructor. Not to say that merely having a certification should be taken as absolute proof that the teacher is competent, but it is a good starting point. Since there is no national Pilates certification exam, certifications will differ in quality. Some are weekend classes that may cover training only as a certified mat instructor or another specific portion of the overall Pilates philosophy. In other cases, these short training sessions try to cover the entire spectrum of Pilates training, which really is not possible in such a short session. There also are comprehensive training sessions that cover the gamut of Pilates principals and take months to complete, and that is what you'd prefer your prospective instructor to have participated in. Usually these longer certification programs require students to have a certain previous length of experience with Pilates, while the shorter classes may or may not.

Also, be aware that various hybrid forms of Pilates exercise now exist. You can do Pilates yoga, Swiss ball Pilates, Pilates with exercise bands, and more. While these may be valuable, the original Pilates was a very precise discipline, and certification in any of these spinoffs really indicates very little regarding the instructor's competence in teaching the original Pilates method.

Conversely, if you have friends that already do Pilates, and they recommend a certain instructor, then that's a good start, even if this particular teacher is not certified. Some instructors were teaching Pilates before certification existed, and having a good reputation and client base, see no reason to become certified. Others just refuse to become certified for various reasons.

Once you find a person you believe is competent, attend a few classes and see how they interact with the students. Is there adequate communication and personal interaction? Pilates is a very exact form of exercise. Every movement needs to be done with precision and at the proper speed. Most students tend to have trouble with these concepts initially, and require one-on-one instruction to get the execution correct. Sometimes modifications will be necessary for certain students, and it takes a Pilates trainer with knowledge and education to know if and when to incorporate these changes.
