The fitness boot camp is an idea that's become extremely popular over the past few years. If you're starting to get bored with your regular gym workouts, you might want to give it a try. It could be just the jump start your fitness program needs.

If you've heard about these types of workouts before, you may be thinking "no way do I need someone screaming at me to exercise". I'm with you on that one. However, You don't need to put up with that if you don't want to. When fitness boot camps first became popular, that's the way they all operated. They were modeled after military boot camps, and the workouts might include slithering through mud or crawling under barbed wire while the instructors did their best imitations of drill sargeants, yelling at the trainees, calling them names, making fun of them, and basically humiliating them. And these people pay for this? Whatever floats your boat, I guess :-)

If that appeals to you, or if you respond better to that kind of motivation, there are still some of these types of fitness boot camps around. But these days, a lot of these classes are of a kindler, gentler variety. The instructors see their role more as motivators and less as humiliators. So they may yell at you, but they will probably be hollering encouragement rather than insulting you or your mother.

Having mostly lost the militaristic flavor, the main advantage of one of these camps is now the fact that they get the trainees out of the gym, where their workouts may have stagnated, and allow them to exercise in the fresh air and sunshine. Or rain, snow and sleet, which some enthusiasts admit to having done - and loved it.

While many of today's classes put less emphasis on the military flavor, be careful not to underestimate them. You might not end up muddy and scratched up after the workout, but it'll still leave you exhausted at the end, and if you stick with it, you're bound to get results.

Many of the current fitness boot camps specialize in a certain type of trainee, so the participants have something in common besides sweat. Some camps focus on brides-to-be while others target new moms who want to lose those stubborn pregnancy pounds. It seems that a lot more women than men attend these camps. One explanation that's been offered is because guys don't like being told what to do - kinda like asking for driving directions!

And while there is less of a military feel to these classes, there is still usually an element of good-natured competition, as no one wants to be the last or slowest. The classes also usually represent a way to save money, as participants get supervised exercise workout sessions at a much lower cost than the typical personal trainer fee.
